The IGU’s Young and Early Career Geographers’ Taskforce (IGU-YECG) was launched on 22 August 2016 at the IGC in Beijing, China. The Taskforce comprises nine members and its primary aims are to promote career development for early career Geographers through mentoring, training and sharing; stimulate interdisciplinary, international and inter-generational research conversations between geographers and acknowledge and elevate the achievements of early career geographers in the Global North and South.

The YECG Taskforce has identified five strategic areas for future work. These include:
- Training and networking events: at IGU annual conferences and also online. More opportunities for participation through paper competitions, field visits, summer/winter schools.
- Publicity: for achievements of individuals who have made a novel/high impact contribution. E.g. Awards for best PhD.
- Feedback channels: to strongly raise issues/problems faced by young and early career researchers in different parts of the world. Make contact…
